Oriental Dance & MassRaqs

Our event's name, MassRaqs, is a play on words. The word 'raqs' means 'dance' in Arabic. MassRaqs could therefore be a massive dance-a-thon (which we plan to have) or it could refer to "Massachusetts dances." Also in our dance community we like to say that something "Raqs" to mean "it rocks!", "it's cool." All those possible meanings go hand in hand with the intent of our event: to celebrate Oriental "belly" dance in Massachusetts, the best way we know how - through dancing! MassRaqs will bring extraordinarily gifted teachers/performers to Boston - for a weekend of massive Raqs in Mass.

Oriental dance (or "belly dance") is the translation of term used in the Arab world to refer to traditional and modern Middle Eastern dance styles: raqs sharqi (Arabic: رقص شرقي‎). Other folk and stage dance forms that are quite different than Raqs Sharqi also get commonly lumped under the terms "belly dance", Middle Eastern Dance, and Oriental dance - in the West.  The dance is also sometimes called Arabic dance, or by the Turkish term çiftetelli (Greek: τσιφτετέλι). The term "Belly dance" is a misnomer as all parts of the body are involved in the dance; the most featured body part in raqs sharqi being the hips. Belly dance takes many different forms depending on country and region, both in costume and dance style; and new styles have been invented in the US as its popularity has spread globally.
